Introduction

Reunion island is an indian Ocean island, part of the Mascareign archipelago including

Mauritius as well as Rodrigues islands. It is roughly located at 9500 kilometers from the continental France.

In the region Reunion is at 2600 kilometers from Johanesbourg South Africa and at 800 kilometers in the east of Madagascar.

This is a very young volcanic land, which emerged from the Indian Ocean 2 to 3 million years ago.

The snow and the Furnace Peaks, two volcano massive are at the origin of its birth.

A few figures: Its surface is of 2512 km2, roughly the same as luxambourg in Europe.

Its lenght is around 70 kilometers long and its width of about 50 kms from eat to west.

207 are required to go around the island. its highest mounts are the Snow Peak 3070 m and

the Gros Morne 2991 m  as well as the Grand Benard 2896 m between others. Frmo north to south there is over 9000 m difference in level !

But it is the furnace peak its active volcano in the south east which is the most famous. It a red hawaïan type volcano. It regularly enters in eruption 2 to 4 ones per year on average, according the year. The last huge one generated over 135 million cubic meters of lava, in april 2007 and considerably modificated the landscape in "the big burnt area" in the wild south.  Magnificent !

Reunion island is a multifaceted land, various landscapes and cultures are cohabiting.
